In 2007, the Foundation for Reusable Systems (SIM, Stiftung Initiative Mehrweg) presented a European study from which it emerged that the production and use of returnable plastic packaging causes 29% less greenhouse gas emissions, demands 39% less energy, and produces 95% less waste. In a similar study in 2009, these results were reconfirmed.
