Logistics market leader Euro Pool System has embarked on a new trajectory. Peter Willems, Euro Pool System’s CEO explains:
“Our business provides optimal logistic solutions, which result in cost savings throughout the whole supply chain. In the past, we managed multi-way crates, which we collected, washed and made ready for re-use.
“But now, we go much further. We optimise logistics from beginning-to-end and back, the so-called return logistics. And every link in the supply chain experiences the benefits, from producer to retailer. In order to realise this, we aim at intensive cooperation with retailers.”

Fewer mistakes, faster product circulation times and 15% labour-costs savings; automatic order picking is a big step forward for Eroski. In June 2010, the Spanish retail chain - a 12-year long Euro Pool System partner - opened a completely restructured consolidation centre in Madrid.
“Euro Pool System has bridged the gap toward logistic knowledge.” explains Logistic Director of Eroski’s Distribution Centres Imanol Alberdi Uria.
For the time being, this is the latest move in a logistics revolutions that the supermarket chain has set into motion. The revolution started twelve years ago when Eroski chose Euro Pool System’s multi-way crates to standardise their containers for fresh products. Between 1998 and 2010, the number of crate rotations grew from 250,000 to no less than 50 million a year.
The second step was the centralisation of fresh products flows via Madrid, which meant a significant improvement in their logistic efficiency and a 30%-reduction in transport kilometres. The third step was the installation of the automatic order picker, with a handling capacity of 150,000 crates a day. “Euro Pool System already had proven experience with automatic order pickers for fresh products with its customers in Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition, Euro Pool System wanted to expand our cooperation and its service providing activities. We actually rent the order picker from Euro Pool System. Our cooperation has entered a new era. Euro Pool System has become a bridge toward logistic knowledge and a bridge between Southern and Northern Europe” said Imanol.
