EPS has made significant progress in sustainable transport solutions by installing high-performing rapid chargers for electrical energy at EPS Central. This initiative, in collaboration with H2 Green Power & Logistics GmbH, is an important step towards achieving fully sustainable transport operations.
The newly installed Rapid Charger 150 from H2 Delivery stands out due to its unique capability of generating its own electricity from sustainable fuel, specifically liquid ethanol which is derived from plant residues. It does not compete with food production and contributes to a circular economy by converting bio-waste into energy. Sustainability Specialist Joke Snoeijs is happy with the development: “At Euro Pool System, we are dedicated to creating sustainable solutions that reflect our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is these types of solutions that help us move forward to reach our goal of becoming the number 1 collaborative sustainable partner for retail.”
The charger does not require any connection to the power grid. With a remarkable system performance of 150kW, it can charge a vehicle up to 200 kilometres in just 15 minutes. The energy storage unit of the charger holds an impressive 4,000 kWh, sufficient to power a vehicle for up to 20,000 kilometres on a single ethanol fill. Notably, the charging process is environmentally friendly, releasing only as much CO2 as the biomass originally absorbed from the atmosphere.
Transforming our energy approach
Strategically placed at the unloading docks of EPS service centres, the chargers allow trucks to recharge while simultaneously unloading and loading trays. Regional Depot Operations Manager Daniel Berief planned the optimal positioning of the chargers to ensure an efficient operational flow. Additionally, during night-time, when the dock doors are not in use, the two available slots for connections with the charger can be utilised, enabling trucks to start the day fully charged and ready for further sustainable transport operations.
Regional Supply Chain & Operations Manager Lars Anders initiated the project less than a year ago: “We recognised that sustainability in logistics means fundamentally transforming our energy approach. This charging solution generates its own clean energy – it’s a part of EPS’s commitment to a circular supply chain.”
We’re very excited as we’re planning to operate the first transports with trucks utilising these advanced charging systems in Hanover-Lauenau and Sangerhausen soon.
